Do your students struggle to translate word problems into a system of linear equations?
This activity is designed to help students learn to become comfortable and proficient at writing equations by asking them to complete progressively more difficult tasks.
It is divided into three sections, with five questions each:
Section 1 - Match the equations with the situations. Each situation matches with two equations.
Section 2 - One equation for each system is provided and students write the second equation.
Section 3 - Students write both equations and calculate the solution for the system. They can look back at their earlier answers for assistance.
In all cases, the variables are defined both to help students to construct the equations and to provide consistency for grading purposes.
