Provide students with a scaffolded close read about the historic Lincoln Douglas debate of 1858. Students will be prompted to annotate and make margin notes throughout the text. Checks for understanding occur throughout the text. They will summarize the text. Multiple questions are asked that require students to synthesize information from the article. They finish the activity with an extended response that requires them to explain the arguments presented by Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln in the Illinois Senate race debates of 1858.
