Product Description
Support students as they learned to write organized paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, and closing sentences while creating fun interactive notebook foldables about natural disasters!

These 3 leveled foldables (Volcanoes, Hurricanes, and Tornadoes), give students an opportunity to practice developing main ideas, details, and strong topic sentences. The foldables build upon one another, by reducing the amount of support provided each day. Every foldable includes a word bank to promote the use of high-level vocabulary words in the students' writing pieces.

After the writing activity, students fold their paragraph in half, draw a picture of the natural disaster on the front, and apply glue to the back side to secure it to their interactive notebook (or writers notebook). Students constantly refer back to these writing pieces throughout the year.

Directions:
After discussing main ideas, details, and topic sentences, give each student a copy of the first scaffolded paragraph writing foldable, "Volcanoes".

Students complete the paragraph by explaining what they think about tornadoes. A word bank is included at the bottom of each foldable for support. When finished, students fold their paper in half, glue the back half to a notebook page, and draw a picture of a volcano on the outside of their foldable.

The next foldable, "Hurricanes", can be used the following day. This foldable gives slightly less support, as it requires the students to develop their own topic sentence, but gives detail sentence starters. When finished, students fold their paper in half, glue the back half to a notebook page, and draw a picture of a hurricane on the outside of their foldable.

The final foldable requires students to use what they have learned about main ideas, details, and topic sentences to complete an entire paragraph about tornadoes. A word bank is still included to promote the use of rich vocabulary. Allow students to refer back to their previous two foldables for additional support as they work through this final task. When finished, students fold their paper in half, glue the back half to a notebook page, and draw a picture of a tornado on the outside of their foldable.
