This product helps students prepare for the ACT Aspire Writing Assessment in Third Grade.
Reflective Narrative in 30 Minutes? Impossible – I think not! I think the answer is scaffolding, slowly removing helpful crutches until students can do it confidently and successfully on their own. Here’s the plan I intend to use in my classroom.
Prompt 1: Work closely with students in analyzing the prompt, choosing a topic, and setting up a planning page that will fit on the scratch paper provided during the test. We will work closely together as a whole group on this prompt, taking it step-by-step. I will pick these up and meet with struggling students as needed.
Prompt 2: Prompt 2 removes the arrows and reminders of where to look in the prompt for the important information they need to know before they write. It also removes the reminders of what needs to be written on the planning page. I will have students work on these together in their writing groups. Students will be able to help each other if they get stuck. They will write independently once the planning page is finished.
Prompt 3: Students will work independently on Prompt 3. At this point they will need to know how to begin a reflective ending without sentence starters. They will also have to set up their planning page independently. I will be working closely with strugglers as they become more independent. A timer should be used at this point to demonstrate the 30 minute time restriction on the assessment. Students not finished at 30 minutes should be allowed time to finish.
Prompt 4: Most scaffolds are removed on Prompt 4. Reminders and suggestions are provided. Students must completely set up their planning page independently. No draft paper is provided, as students should practice typing their narratives from their planning page at this point. Students should be timed for 30 minutes.
Prompt 5: Prompt 5 is the “official” ACT Aspire Writing Exemplar. No scaffolds or reminders are given. Students should be given Prompt 5 in a “testing environment” with scratch paper and should be timed and stopped at 30 minutes.
I hope this helps get us all to the finish line! Good luck everyone!
