Students explore scale drawings and surface area in this engaging project with a classroom makeover!
The PBL activity has three parts:
Working with Scale Drawings
Students use a scaled drawing of a classroom on a grid to answer questions and gain familiarity with drawing to scale.
My Current Classroom
Students measure their current classroom and the furniture inside. They use the measurements to create a scaled drawing of the room on graph paper.
Dream Classroom Makeover
Students begin with a client interview and brainstorm ideas for a classroom redesign. Then they calculate the amount of paint and flooring needed, along with the costs. They measure surface area of objects to repaint. Next, they research and choose new furniture for the classroom, recording the dimensions and costs. Finally, they create a large scale drawing of their new classroom design with the chosen pieces inside.
This PBL activity comes with a ready-to-print PDF and an editable version in PowerPoint (.pptx). A simple rubric is included to give students feedback on the elements of the project.
Students will need rulers. (Tape measures will be helpful too.)
This project can be assigned for individuals, partners, or group work. Optional extensions are given for early finishers.
Students will get to put several math standards to use in a real world scenario!
