In this activity, students USE MODELS to understand the "concept" of scaling when multiplying fractions. The Common Core Standard seeks to get the students to the point when they can scale WITHOUT performing the multiplication. This activity uses models to help SCAFFOLD students to this mental understanding of scaling. Using the models helps students to grow in their ability to visualize the product so that, eventually, they will be able to scale without using visuals and without performing the multiplication.
Students use the "greater than", "less than", and "equal to" signs to make the comparison.
