Product Description
People in all sorts of professions use scaled down models every day, but do your students know how to make them? I have typically used these activities during my science astronomy unit (because the final activity involves scaling down the solar system) but this lesson could be used for math or any other class where models are discussed. There are multiple supplies needed for this four day lesson, but the hands-on experiences for your students make it worthwhile. On day one, students make a scaled down model of the classroom. During day two, students scale down a soda can. On the last two days students scale down the planets of the solar system and create an edible model.

This lesson includes:
*Teacher notes (including detailed instructions for each day, and pictures of sample student work)
*Student Scaling Down a Soda Can Sheet
*Scaling Down a Soda Can Key
*Student Scaling Down the Planets Sheet
*Scaling Down the Planets Key
*Student Scaling Down the Planets Planning Sheet
*Scaling Down the Planets Planning Sheet Key

Supplies needed for setup:
*Graph paper (1 sheet per student)
*Meter sticks
*Rulers
*Soda can
*Measuring tape (optional for grading soda cans)
*Plastic knives
*Wax paper (approximately 3 meters needed per student group I suggest group sizes of 4-5)
*Permanent markers (for labeling wax paper)

Students will need:
*3 pans of brownies (size 9”x13”) per group (I suggest group sizes of 4-5)
*Material of their choice to represent the planets
*Spatula (optional) for scooping brownies out of the pan
