This journal asks the students to critically analyze how Hawthorne uses character, setting, symbols, and language to develop theme or plot. It includes some research on the time period and on the author. The students are also asked to outline the plot.
The journal is a double entry journal in which the students record descriptions of the novel elements on the left; and on the right, they record an analysis of their entries on the left.
A rubric is included.
