This biographical unit is a great way introduce your students to Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of The Scarlet Letter and other works of literature. The resource is designed as an informational reading and writing unit for upper middle and high school students.
Included in this resource:
1) a text about Hawthorne’s childhood and adolescence;
2) a second passage about his adulthood and career as a writer;
3) each of the biographical passages have questions (comprehension and opinion) on the right side of the page - the texts and the accompanying questions can therefore be used in class as bellringer activities. Each one also has a “Language Use” activity or a short writing assignment;
4) a vocabulary quiz - there are eight statements about Hawthorne based on information found in the passages. Students are asked to replace the underlined word from a choice of four - the correct answer has the same meaning as the underlined word and importantly, the correct choice word appears in one of the texts.
