This is a summative assessment project for the Scarlet Letter. This is a two part project. The first part of this project is an essay. It asks students to explain how if they were required to wear a letter for a mistake that they had made, what would it be? It requires them to go back to the text and compare how they would feel to specific events where Hester was looked down upon or scrutinized based on her situation. There is a rubric provided in the directions.
The second part of the project gives the students an opportunity to choose what they would like to do. The students are given a wide range of options including: creating videos, writing eulogies for certain characters, making a newspaper, and writing a diary for a character.
This is a time consuming activity if you allow your students to complete this in class, however, it really allows students to show their deep understanding of the story. I received a very positive response from my students when they were able to show off their finished product.
