Want to get in the Halloween spirit but tired of doing the same, overdone lessons every year? This activity is for you.

In this activity, students are challenged to create a suspenseful or scary twist to their favorite fairy tale and collaborate in groups to create a masterpiece they will present to the class.

  1. Students analyze a poem in order to see how authors use diction, imagery, and dialogue to create a suspenseful tone.
  2. Students will brainstorm how they would turn their favorite fairy tale into a scary tale.
  3. Students are grouped together and pitch their ideas to each other and vote on the best one to work on.
  4. Students decide how to divide up their work.
  5. Students write and revise their stories.
  6. Students compose a presentation and show their masterpieces to the class.

A single point rubric is included in this activity, along with group reflection sheets, and explicit guidelines for what students should turn in for a grade.
