I have played this game with classes ranging from 3rd grade through 8th grade, and they have all loved Scattergories. The game is quick to explain and easy to understand, and it is great for building vocabulary. I currently use this activity as a reward with my middle school ELL students who are about half SPED.
You can choose to play this game for any amount of time. I typically give my middle school students about 5 minutes per category, so you could play three categories in fifteen minutes, etc.
As quickly as possible, fill out a category list with answers that begin with the same letter that is chosen for that round. (Players take turns choosing letters.)
How to Score Points:
Score points if no other player has the same answers as you.
1 point = a word that does not start with that round’s letter
2 points = a word that starts with that round’s letter
4 points = double words that start with that round’s letter (e.g. bubble bath)
6 points = triple words that start with that round’s letter (e.g. chocolate chip cookies)
*The teacher will judge if your responses are acceptable.
How to Win:
The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins.
