This document contains language frames that are specific to helping "Mary" a struggling teacher reflect on using pedagogical approaches. The dialog takes place after observing Mary's lesson. For her lesson, she had students read a text for homework and then during class time the following day the coach observed Mary as she led a discussion about the text with the entire class or a small group. The form is written in a coach the coach format.

Specific pedagogical practices that are in the coach the coach dialog include: how to create extent learning opportunities, assessing student learning, and get students to use text support to justify thinking.

Invite Mary to Ask Open Questions:
"Mary, have you tried asking open questions? These are questions that require more critical thinking and go beyond just "yes" or "no" or short responses that are typical of closed questions." "I will provide you with tips as you teach to some open questions techniques."

To Promote Student-Generated Questions:
To get students to use their imaginations suggest that Mary ask the students to come up with "I wonder" questions. Prompt: "Mary, you may want to consider asking the students to pause and think of an "I wonder" question. Then randomly call on a student. You could ask the student, "What do you wonder about in terms of the future of space exploration?"

You can modify the content as needed, but the conversation are to promote coach reflection and guidance when working with teachers.
