I created this packet because this year I have a group of students who think quite literally. When presented with text and asked to understand what isn’t directly stated, they struggled. Some of these scenarios in this file and their accompanying questions may seem obvious to us as adults, but I found that they were perfect for my at-grade-level students and a challenge to my struggling readers. They wanted to copy words directly from the text into their answers. These very short passages gave me opportunities to talk about adding up the clues to see the whole picture.
The last several pages are riddle poems that were challenging even for my above grade level readers. As in every class, I need differentiated activities to teach the reading strategy and stretch all my students.
The activities here are appropriate for whole group introduction, small group work, and independent work. They are complete so a teacher could leave them for a guest teacher to complete.
Included in this packet are twelve scenarios of everyday activities, ten riddle poems for more advanced readers, and a complete answer key. I hope you enjoy using these activities with your students.
