Looking for a way to integrate the analysis of multiple interpretations of a play into your curriculum? This activity helps students do just that as well as provides them an opportunity to practice writing about their analysis. the activity focuses on the last scene in Hamlet, but could easily be adapted to work for any scene from any play. My students often have trouble "reading" plays, but this activity prompts them to begin to consider elements that contribute to different interpretations but doesn't limit them to only consider prescripted elements.
I found this was a great prep for a whole-class discussion as well as a great pre-writing activity for an argumentative essay. The essay prompt is included as well as a rubric for the activity and links for viewing.
