At the end of the year, I always seem to have a some sets of Scholastic News left over with no way to get through them all. Instead of tossing them, I use the last few weeks of school to have the students work collaboratively to learn about the cover story and create a poster and presentation to teach the rest of the class about the cover story.
These are the directions I use for the collaborative project. The project has three major components:
1. A poster focusing on the main idea, details, key words, text structure and text features of the cover story.
2. An organized presentation about the cover story to teach the rest of the class.
3. Instructions on how to create a student generated printable quiz in Google Docs.
The students love being the teacher and it provides both freedom and structure which I find necessary in the final weeks of school!
