These addition and subtraction word problems are written to address the common core math standard for first grade: Operations and Algebraic Thinking 1.OA.1 "Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem."
The files are in a "black-line" format, to keep printing costs down. You may see lines in the pdf, but the pages print great. The "school kids" theme can be used throughout the year at any time.
According to the Common Core Standards, there are 12 types of word problems first grade students should encounter. I have included at least 3 of each type, on a full-page format which allows students plenty of room to show their work. I generally ask my students to draw a picture and write an equation (number sentence) when they show their work. This full-page format is helpful for guided instruction, practice, homework, and/or assessment pieces.
There are more story problems to cut and glue into students' math journals. These can be used in addition-to the full-page format.
I hope you enjoy this resource!
