This low-prep, thought-provoking resource was created for the purpose of giving 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students practice with creatively building their brains as a way of developing awareness to a smarter “school” mindset. This is done through answering a series of questions with regards to a school’s location, the school’s staff, and other specific details that students should really know about the school that they attend. This product is versatile in that it can be used after a few weeks of a new school year beginning, during the middle of a school year, or at the end of a school year.
How It Works: Students are presented with a set of 40 task cards, each with a question that requires writing answer choices using the letters a, b, c, d, or e. Answers are written down on an answer recording sheet.
*Two (2) “Are you up for the Challenge?” motivational posters (1 color & 1 b/w)
*One (1) “I’m up for the Challenge!” motivational poster (b/w only)
*Two (2) Notetaking Graphic Organizers (one with graphic/words and one w/graphic)
*Student Answer Recording Sheet
*Forty (40) School Mindset Brain Workout Task Cards (+ 3 blanks)
*All task cards, graphic organizers, and two (2) of the motivational posters have been produced using black, gray, and white ink. TIP: Consider copying the task cards on brightly colored cardstock for a look that “pops!”
*There are two (2) notetaking graphic organizers included with this resource. Please feel free to use these graphic organizers in any way that fits the academic needs and levels of your students.
*The following is merely a suggestion on how to use this task card set in a creative and fun way for your kiddos. Please keep an open mind regarding their academic needs and levels, though. :)
1. Tell your kiddos that they will be going on a WALKING EXPEDITION AROUND THE SCHOOL.
2. As they walk around the school, the students will be working together to answer certain task card questions. This will be done by taking notes and writing them down using their graphic organizers. **MAKE SURE YOU’RE THAT TAKING NOTES AS WELL**
3. After the walking expedition is over, students will return to the classroom to complete their answer recording sheets, remembering to record answers as a, b, c, d, or e.
4. Seat your paired students together BEFORE giving them the answers to the task card questions. Watch the expressions on their faces as the answers are revealed...fun! :)
*REMINDER: There is no answer key included with this resource. Answers for the task card questions will be different from school to school, because no two schools are alike.
*IMPORTANT: I’ve indicated which questions should be answered while on the walking expedition by placing the letters “WE” in certain number boxes on the answer key.
*Included is a poster that can used to help encourage and motivate your kiddos into doing their best to answer questions accurately while on the walking expedition. For your convenience, the poster has been produced in both color AND black and white.
Happy Answering Questions about School Mindset! :)
