This packet is a bundle of all my Pet Shop themed project based learning activities. It is perfect for a building to buy for students to all be working on a common theme! There are lessons that are aligned with common core for Kinder-4th grade. When my school does this we also have guest speakers come in and really build up the pet shop theme throughout our school!
Please see these descriptions for grade level projects below!
Kinder: In this project students will practice sorting, adding, and graphing fish. There are fish and aquariums to cut out for students to sort, add, and graph. At the end of the unit students will use tickets to buy materials to create their own aquariums. There is also a pre and post assessment included. To complete this project you will also need sheet protectors, Goldfish crackers, pipe-cleaners, aquarium rocks, and recycled strawberry containers.
Six Common Core Standards are covered in this project based learning activity for Kindergarteners!
First Grade: This packet includes 4 activities for students to practice comparing numbers all with a pet shop theme. Students will use these activities to see the real life connection in why we need to learn subtraction to make wise decision. One of the activities does have students make a collar for an animal from home using pipe-cleaners and beads, however you could still do the rest of the unit without doing that activity. That particular project also has student measure using any unit of your choice. The final project students will work on is to use subtraction to make a budget for two different pets. Students will then decide which pet and supplies they would like to buy and will create a poster to share with the class. This project uses basic subtraction facts and teaches students the strategies of counting up, counting back, using double facts, and drawing a picture. This is a great project for younger students that is sure to engage them in a fun way! There is also a pre and post test included and the activities are all differientiated. There are grade level subtraction problems using basic facts and enrichment problems for students who pass the pretest.
Second Grade: This packet has real life examples for students to work with even and odd numbers including, the number of items in packages, the number of animals in our pet shop, and the price of items in our pet shop. Each activity is DI for enrichment from 2nd grade standards. At the end of the unit students will shop for either Even Steven or Odd Todd and will buy a pet and supplies for that person based on who they are shopping for.
To complete this project you will need: decks of cards (optional), Even Steven and Odd Todd Book or Youtube access to watch it being read, and baggies.
3rd Grade: This packet includes several activities to teach and review telling time to the minute and elapsed time. It has a Pet Shop Theme where students will be doing different task for the pet shop. They will work with a grooming schedule, a walking schedule, creating a hamster maze (engineering), and a feeding schedule. Students will also review measuring in centimeters and multiplying by 7. It includes a pretest and a post-test!
To complete the projects in this packet you will need meter or yard sticks, cardboard, straws, marbles, and tape.
4th Grade: In this "Pet Shop" themed unit students will learn 3 different ways to do 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication by doing inventory each day for our pet shop. There are also enrichment pages for students who are ready for 4 digt by 2 digit multiplication. In addition students will be entering a contest for birds that fly the furthest and bunnies that jump the furthest from our pet shop. In order to find the measurements students will have to convert from cm to meters and from inches to feet. Students will construct these animals to incorporate science engineering standards. There is a pre test and 2 post test included in this packet.
To complete the projects in this packet you will need cups, rubber bands, and a hole punch!
