This colorful file folder game allows students to practice identifying which letter in a word has the schwa sound. They will read a word and determine which letter has the schwa sound.
Students move along the game board each time a correct answer is given. The first player to the end, wins!
In Grade 3 Reading Street (2007) Unit 6-2, "Happy Birthday, Mr. Kang" the phonics lesson for the week is the schwa sound. This is what gave me the idea for this game. I chose "Travel About" as the title because both of those words have the schwa sound. Therefore the game theme is 'travel.' Be assured that you do not have to use Reading Street in order to play the game. Any teacher who wants to reinforce the schwa sound can have their students play this game!
This is easy to assemble. Included is:
title for front of file folder,
title for tab of file folder,
label for ziploc bag to store game pieces and cards,
information about the schwa sound,
24 task cards,
Student Response Sheet, and
an answer key.
