ZAP! is a fun and engaging way to have students practice any kind of skill from forming plurals to identifying fact and opinion statements. This ZAP! game provides students with practice in completing analogies related to science topics that are written in standard form.

For example... night : day :: black : white
Which is read... NIGHT is to DAY as BLACK is WHITE

ZAP! is basically a print and go activity that requires minimal preparation yet yields great fun and GREAT RESULTS, escpecially this version with the added twist of the ZIP and the ZOP features!

Materials:
*Medium to large empty Pringle’s container (or something similar) with the lid; a paper bag will work in a pinch
*Container label p. 1
*Activity cards pp. 3-9
*Answer Key p. 10

Assembly:
*Affix label to the container. You may want to cover the container with construction or contact paper completely before affixing the label.
*Cut apart the activity strips and place them inside the container, mixing them well. *The ZIP and ZOP cards are OPTIONAL to use. Remove them to play a traditional game of ZAP!
*Store the answer key inside the container as well.

To Play:

Divide your class into several teams depending on the number of students. ZAP is also great for a small group of students playing individually.

Determine how long you will play or how many rounds you will complete.

Have a student draw a strip from the container without looking inside. The student should read the words on the strip, then confer with the team to determine the answer. For this particular ZAP game you may want to have teams write their answers on a small whiteboard with a dry erase marker or on a piece of paper with a marker.

If the team answers correctly, it keeps the strip. If it answers incorrectly the strip is returned to the container.

Teams take turns drawing/collecting the strips. However, there is a twist. If a team draws a ZAP! card, it must return ALL of its strips to the container. OPTIONAL: If it draws a ZIP card, the team draws two cards to answer. If it draws a ZOP card, they team may steal a card from another team. Return the ZIP, ZAP, ZOP cards to the container after each turn.

The winner is the team that collects the most strips. You may want to award them with a simple prize such as a treat, bonus points on an upcoming quiz/test, 5 minutes of free time, etc.

This set of 32 ZAP Cards (28 skill strips and 4 special play strips) can also be used as regular task cards (minus the ZIP, ZAP, ZOP Cards). Place them in a literacy center or play a game of SCOOT or SCATTER. This game can also be used as a small group, rather than whole class, activity.
