This is an end-of-the-unit Changing Earth project designed for 5th grade GATE (Gifted and Talented) students but could be modified for a regular ed classroom. Just like when they play Tic Tac Toe, students must select three boxes in a row to complete according to ALL directions in the boxes by the due date. Various tasks include creating a Rock Cycle Powerpoint with specific slide content parameters, a Baby Book for a rock of their choice, a Crossword Puzzle showcasing important vocabulary from the unit, writing an Alfred Wegener journal after researching his theory of Continental Drift, creating a Volcano Awareness Poster, writing a newspaper article about a recent earthquake, a written tour through the layers of the Earth, and more! Topics covered: layers of the Earth (crust, mantle, outer core, inner core), plate tectonics (convergent, divergent, transform/sliding boundaries), earthquakes, volcanoes, and the rock cycle. I usually allow at least one week to complete this project. The kids, especially GATE kids, love to design their own projects - giving them choices allows them to showcase their knowledge in the way that best suits them. They really enjoy this project!
