Are you looking for supplementary resources to upgrade your Science curriculum on Classifying Organisms? Look no more!
These simple yet great one-page worksheets to introduce/ practice to use the dichotomous key which is used by scientists to identify the living arthropods. Biodiversity counts!
Yes, it is concise and straightforward. But anyway… wondering how to use it? Students are given a list of arthropods images, and they have to use the key to determine the name of the arthropod. Answers are included.
Handout the two printables: observation sheet and the dichotomous key of your choice (Sheet 1, 2 or 4), then ask the students to begin by observing all illustrated creature they want to identify. Guide them (if it is necessary) to look for distinguishing features. These are different for each organism. Kiddos should make notes on such features as focusing on body parts, color, patterns, etc. Only then they should work with the dichotomous key provided. The key immediately gives them two alternatives. Encourage the students to read both of them, to decide which description best fits the evidence, and move on to the next set of two choices given in the key.
Actually, this PDF file with Student’s worksheets includes the following:
♦ page # 1 - a title page;
♦ page # 2 – observation sheet to make notes;
♦ page # 3 - a worksheet to identify the insects (ladybug, dragonfly, ant, fly, and termite);
♦ page # 4 - a worksheet to identify the insects (ladybug, dragonfly, mosquito, cockroach, and termite);
♦ page # 5 - a worksheet to describe the five classes of arthropods (insects, arachnids, centipede, crustaceans, and millipede);
♦ page # 6 - a worksheet to identify the arthropods (insect, arachnid, centipede, crustacean, and millipede);
♦ page # 7 - key answers;
♦ page # 8 - resources.
And the PPT (read-only format) file with includes the set of illustrated colorful images of the arthropods so they could make notes of their observations.
It is an open-ended way to use these handouts to use their critical observation skills to identify each individual organism. Use it as the introduction to the unit of Classifying Organisms, homework activity or test their understanding of the Dichotomous key concept. Have fun with it!
