Reading and understanding informational text is a critical skill for success throughout school and life. However, many students struggle to grasp key ideas when reading. These sheets can be used for morning bell work or in literacy centers to help support students in developing their reading comprehension skills in this important genre.
Standards addressed include:
*CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
*CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
*CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area.
*CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.8 Describe the logical connection between particular sentences and paragraphs in a text (e.g., comparison, cause/effect, first/second/third in a sequence).
There are 5 different mini-passages included in this pack. The passages focus on science content allowing your time to go further!
For each passage there are 8 half sheet assignments for students including 4 open-ended and 4 multiple choice. This provides students multiple opportunities to look at the same text through different lenses as they work to interpret main idea, context clues, author's purpose and more. At the request of a reviewer, I have also added a single page with all 4 multiple choice for use as a weekly wrap-up or formative assessment.
These are great for differentiation (where some kids get the free response and others get the multiple choice-)or as a progressive skill building over time (starting with the multiple choice set and then transitioning to the free response).
This packet also includes three graphic organizers with accompanying comprehension questions that can be used for any informational text in your collection.
