Use the ice cream cones (brown construction paper) and scoops (ice cream flavor colors) to display the data as students master each objective in the 4th grade science curriculum. Put the student’s names on each cone and place in an open section (hall or wall in classroom). After the unit is taught, give the students a test to check for master. When they master the information, give them a scoop of ice cream– the students can compete to see who masters all of the objectives first.
Another thing to do with the ice cream cones is for displaying math facts. When I taught math, once a week the students took a “Mad Minute Math” test of each math fact. 2’s then 3’s and so forth. When they can do 10 math facts in a minute, they get the 2’s ice cream cone and on and one. Choose a day so that the students know when they will be tested so they will study up to that day. Pass out the sheet of 10 facts and time them – all who make 100 get a scoop and those who don’t have to study to be ready for the next time. You could even do it more than once a week if needed. This was very successful for me and the kids loved it.
