What is a digital breakout?
Also called Unlock the Box and Escape Room activities, a breakout requires students to unlock a series of locks using clues that can be found in various documents, puzzles, videos and many other resources. A digital breakout is completed entirely on a computer, phone, tablet (iPad) or other device. All websites used in this breakout are produced with Google sites and/or other Google products. Students will be required to use content knowledge as well as critical and logical thinking skills to solve the puzzles and open the digital locks.
The Benefits of Digital Breakouts:
Breakouts require students to use content knowledge as well as critical and logical thinking skills to successfully determine the combinations of the locks.
If the breakout is used as a partner or team activity, it fosters communication and collaboration between students. This gives students an opportunity to analyze their leadership sills and try different teamwork strategies.
Breakouts require sustained problem solving over an extended period of time. This helps students build stamina while working on difficult tasks.
Breakouts are engaging and students often get excited as they get closer to Breaking Out!
Breakouts give students an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a unique experience.
Breakouts are designed for a diverse population of students. Different types of locks and puzzles are used in the breakout so that all learners can be challenged and demonstrate success in multiple areas of content and types of thinking.
Breakouts are student directed. Teachers do a lot of observing and listening during the breakout, while students take the lead in their own learning.
