I created and implemented this unit in a small group gifted and talented pull-out classroom. It could be done with fourth or fifth graders. Parts of the unit may also be appropriate for independent enrichment.
The purpose of the unit is to teach about the genre of science fiction, how to compose science fiction, how to appreciate science fiction, how science fiction is based on science fact, and how science fiction often predicts the future.
a unit anticipation guide
an explanation of the major thinking skills
several in class projects with directions
supportive materials to scaffold sci fi writing
Most of this document contains reproducible info to augment your instruction or for teachers to give to students who are excelling at the normal curriculum and need extra challenges. My students really enjoyed this unit and have a whole new outlook on the world!
I allowed the students to construct their own research reports and virtual museums at the end of the unit, which we showed to parents. It was a huge success (more information in the packet regarding this).
When I conducted the unit, almost everything was done in class (except the noted homework which you will find in the document). With videos and supplements, this unit took several weeks to complete but you can easily shorten or extend it.
With my unit, your children will practice real-world problem solving, creative writing, speaking, close reading, evaluating extremophiles, questioning the world around them, and understanding the impact we have on the world and the future.
