Card Sorts of Science Bundle
This card sort
is for practicing recognition and identification of the physical properties and locations of the Sun, planets, and other objects (asteroids and comets) that exist in the Solar System.
This card set includes TWO sets!
This allows you to switch out one set for another so that students don't memorize matches based on their number/letter match.
The card sort comes with 38 cards.
-12 cards are the Celestial Object Cards .
These cards include the Sun, Moon, Planets, Asteroid, and Comet. The front of the cards display the object and name. The back of each of these cards have their correct match up with the other cards below.
-12 cards are the Unique Feature Cards.
These cards show two to three unique features about one of the Celestial objects. These cards are labeled with letters.
-10 cards are the Numerical Feature Cards.
Displayed on each of these is the Mass, Diameter, Distance from the Sun, Rotation, Revolution, Surface Temperature, and Number of Moons. There are only ten of these cards because these aspects can't really be applied to Asteroids or Comets.
-2 cards are the Location Cards.
Planets will either be classified as an Inner Planet or Outer Planet... these cards only can be matched with the Planet Cards.
-2 cards are the Planet Type Cards.
Planets will either be classified as a Terrestrial Planet or Gas Giant Planet... these cards only can be matched with the Planet Cards.
-Using cardstock paper works best for the cards...
for durability, and so that even the faded answers don't show through.
This card sort can be played MULTIPLE ways:
-A student can put down the Inner Planet card… and then find all of the matching planets. The student can put down the Outer Planet card… and then find all of the matching cards.
-A student can put down the Terrestrial card… and then find all of the matching planets. The student can put down the Gas Giant card… and then find all of the matching cards.
-A student can put down a Celestial Object Card (Planets, Sun, Moon, Asteroid, Comet) and then find all of the corresponding cards for that object. For example: When putting the Mercury card, there will be FOUR corresponding cards… the Inner Planet card, the Terrestrial card, its Unique Feature card, and its Numerical Feature card. All eight planets will have four corresponding cards. The Sun and Moon will have only two (Unique Feature and Numerical) cards each. The Asteroid and Comet will only have one (Unique Feature) card each.
-Any one of the Feature (Unique or Numerical) cards can be placed down first… and then the Celestial Object card can be found and placed down that matches it.
Teachers, there are multiple ways to present this practice to students. Make a class set and put the cards into sandwich bags. Make only one set and use it as a station. You can always make it as I've shown in the pictures and have every student have a set in their science journals.
The great part about this card sort is that there are three envelope cut-outs provided for each card set. These envelopes hold each set of cards and these envelopes can be glued onto a page in the journal as shown in the picture above. (I prefer double-sided tape!)
Each envelope has an image that represents the set of cards. The top flap of the envelope is also labeled.
Using card stock paper for the cards works the best! Be sure to print cards two-sided! Let me know what you think! Thanks!
