This set of lab group role cards outline what each student is responsible for during a lab activity or experiment. The lab cards can be cut out and laminated to be distributed to student groups. The lab cards could also be cut out and posted at each lab station as a reminder of each role's responsibility. There are six lab roles: taskmaster, spokesperson, timer/measurer, illustrator, recorder and materials manager. Some of these roles could be combined or not needed for each lab. My using the roles, the student group ensures that they work together to complete a lab activity or experiment. It is important for students to understand that even with an assigned role, it is the responsibility of the group as a whole that everyone has a way to participate in the activity. The teacher can facilitate this participation by explicit instructions and practice using these roles and making participation/following lab role directions part of the activity grade.
