In Science Class, I like to assign Lab Roles so that each student has something special to contribute to the team. I typically want all of the students writing in their Interactive Notebooks during labs, so my roles focus on set-up, on-task behavior, and clean-up. I also like to use acronyms in my class, so I chose L.A.B.S.S. If you only have four to a group, you would not necessarily need the Sweeper job. At some table groups, the Supplier and the Sweeper are the same person. The Leader also fills in for any role where a student may be absent.
On non-lab days, I still use these roles. For example, the Supplier always picks up the Interactive Notebooks and handouts from the tubs at the beginning of each class. The Beginner always goes first during table group discussions. The Sweeper always puts the notebooks away. We typically switch jobs every couple of weeks so that each table-mate experiences each job in one quarter’s time.
