PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Laboratories are great for reinforcement of learning! They allow students to take their knowledge and apply it to the outside world while still practicing, reinforcing concepts, and learning additional information with ease! This download is a series of some of my personal favorite labs. Scroll down for additional details about this product and the laboratories included in this bundle.

Taxonomy and Classification Worksheet Bundle

Laboratories included in this bundle:
1 Create Your Own Dichotomous Keys
This not only allows for the initial, surface level understanding of what a dichotomous key is, but allows the student to fully immerse themselves and gain a much deeper understanding of the entire process. Students must create their own dichotomous keys using selected species. They are given two formats they can use, either graphical or traditional.

2 Junkfood Kingdom
Students have to place themselves in the shoes of a taxonomist. They are given a variety of snack foods, chips, granola bars, popcorn... basically whatever is handy. Based on the students in this class, this lesson is highly adjustable. Lower level class? Limit the number of 'junkfoods' or make the distinctions between each more easily recognizable. Have a higher level class? Increase the number of 'junkfoods' and make the distinctions between each not so clear. There are 5 reflection questions that must be answered and turned in with their classification system they created.

3 Photo Journal Project
This is a project where students will be documenting and details examples from the domain Eukarya. Students will use real world examples to help sort and organize all of the classification and taxonomy infomration that they will be learning about in class. They will create a journal with an organism per page with details about each organism.

4 Biome Concept Map
Students will create a map on a particular biome. The concept map should include terms and concepts related to the biome. Each group will have a different biome and must present the information to the class. Images must be included, either digital or cut from magazines. Students will gain a greater understanding of biomes while completing this project.

5. Starch Diffusion Lab
This is a classic laboratory illustrating the concept of semipermeable membranes. Students will have a plasic baggie and fill it with a starch and water solution. They will also have a beaker with an iodine and water solution. Students will then observe the semipermeable membrane when the baggie is left in the iodine solution for a 15 minute period of time. Students will have to identify the results, analyze the results, and answer conclusion questions to create a deeper understanding of the membrane, vocabulary, and laboratory processses.

6. Photosynthesis and Respiration
In this laboratory, students will observe photosynthesis and respiration of plants. Students will be given several small jars, such as baby food jars, and will set them up with plants and specific directions. Students will have to record the results. With questions, students will be responsible for interpreting the results, analyzing the changes, and identifying the processes of photosynthesis and respiration.

7. Bacteria Research Activity
Students will be given a list of information they will be required to research. They must fill out a poster board or chart with details of the bacterium, any diseases it causes, benefits, etc. They will then answer introduction and factual questions, research questions, and conclusion questions about the research.

8. Virus Research Activity
Students will be given a list of viruses/diseases that they will be required to research. They must fill out a poster board or chart with details of the disease, long term effect, transmission, etc. They will then answer introduction and factual questions, research questions, and conclusion questions about the research. To reduce time spent on the subject or decrease the difficulty level, students do not have to research all of the viruses listed and can pick one or be assigned one.

9. Virus Transmission Laboratory
This is a laboratory where students will be able to get a hands on experience of how quickly and easy viruses can spread. They will each be given a test tube and will "spread" the virus between each other. Students will have to document the viral spread as well as answer conclusion questions analyzing what happened as well as dig deeper into viruses and viral spread.

10. Crime Series - Baby Swap
This laboratory will investigate of two babies were swapped at birth. Using knowledge of genetics, blood typing, and pedigrees, students will be given information and be required to solve the mystery if the babies were indeed swapped.

11. Crime Series - Carbohydates, Lipids, Nucleic Acids, and Proteins
This laboratory will investigate a theft and the evidence left behind. Students will gain familiarity with organic compounds, testing of organic compounds, analysis of laboratory results, and solve the mystery.
