Every student in my science lab is required to keep a science notebook. I've found that students who personalize their notebook are more likely to take responsibility for and pride in their notebook, so we always decorate the cover page on the first day of school.
The first three templates (one for kindergarten, one for 1st grade, and one for 2nd grade) are laid out 2 per page; I've found that that half sheet of paper is the perfect size to glue into the composition books that my students keep as science notebooks. This template features words in bubble lettering that can be colored in, and lots of science pictures around the edges to color. (Please see the picture previews for an example.) I use this template for my kindergarteners because I find that they often come to me not knowing what science really is, so they can't draw "sciencey" pictures to decorate!
The last three templates (one for kindergarten, one for 1st grade, and one for 2nd grade) are laid out 4 per page. I use this template for my 1st graders. By then, they've had one year of science with me, so they have an idea of what kinds of pictures they can draw. The students glue this 1/4 sheet of paper into the middle of their cover page, color the letters, and then draw and color science pictures around the edges.
