The open ended experiment is ideally used at the beginning of the year to both review the steps of a laboratory write-up and / or to assess the student’s abilities to run and write a lab report. The lab is broken down into 6 unidentified parts: hypothesis, equipment & set-up, procedure, data table, analysis, and conclusion. Places for the procedure steps and a data table are included to help students realize the correct order of the parts.
The instructor can lay out pretty much an set of equipment, since the lab is open ended. And students are free to use their creatively to choose their own variables and procedures.
