I love the new science standards but the first year my 5th graders took the science performance task, I knew they were not prepared, nor was I. The curriculum did a wonderful job with the content on the material, but I felt it lacked preparing my students for performance task requirement for state testing. That is why, I began creating science performance tasks. This should take your students 30-45 minutes to complete and all the content should be taught beforehand.
Important concepts addressed in this performance task include:
• Different “systems” (biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere)
• Food chain (Produce/consumer)
• Red worms and their living environment (Their habitat and what will happen while living in their habitat)
A key is provided with the answers to each question along with a rubric to grade your students.
