PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Science Process Skills Unit with Lapbook Your students will DO WHAT SCIENTISTS DO as they read about famous scientists, and then actually use the process skills in different activities. A complete unit for teaching about six science process skills that also includes close reading in the content areas. 49-page teaching unit, 26-page lapbook file, and 49-slide PowerPoint!

Doing What Scientists Do Unit includes 6 different two-page biographical informational texts about the lives of six different scientists. Your students will read closely to identify the science process skills used by each scientist. Then they will apply those process skills themselves in six different activities. Your students will learn to observe, infer, classify, measure, communicate, and experiment like scientists! Your students will read about Sylvia Earle, Karen Chin, Ivan Pavlov, Benjamin Banneker, Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley, and Francis Beaufort. This unit also includes an introduction to the scientific method.

As your students read and learn about the science process skills, this Doing What Scientists Do Unit gives your students a way to show and practice what they have learned. They can complete 12 different foldable pieces to make a lapbook about the science process skills and the six famous scientists. These pieces are great for formative assessment as you work through the unit.

The informational text is perfect for meeting your Common Core Reading Standards!! I wrote this Do What Scientist Do Unit because I couldn't find anything appropriate for my third-graders! I wanted something that incorporated information about real-life science and scientists that wasn't too simple. I wanted to be able to meet the new demands of the Common Core for informational text. This text will provide your students with a rigorous text, but it's written in a way that will allow your third, fourth, and fifth grade students to be successful in reading and comprehending the information. This unit is great for practicing student discourse and accountable talk as the students discuss what makes each scientist a scientist.
