Engage and Excite young learners with this hands on UNIT of WORK

This exploring flight unit of work introduces students to the materials needed for flight. They will examine and determine what materials are best and after various tests will create their own flying apparatus. This is a very hands on unit and in each lesson students will be touching, testing and exploring. They will also be using scientific language and questioning.

Each lesson is structured with
Engage/Introduction This is the teachers chance to get the students excited for the lesson. Lots of fun ideas and quick and exciting activities.
This is the main teaching and exploring part of the lesson. Where students participate in activities and test their designs.
Learning Reflection This is the students chance to present or explain what happened, what they observed and what they learnt. This is an important part of verbalizing and consolidating learning.

Lesson 1 - Exploring with Paper Airplanes
Students explore the properties of plain paper. What makes it go further through the air? They make their own paper plane and test it. Students use informal measurements and draw diagrams. They answer and ask questions about their observations.

Lesson 2 Exploring Materials
Students will test materials to use for creating a flying object. Students will be able to choose which materials to make their glider from.

Lesson 3 - Building a Glider
Students will design and build their own gliders. They will test their gliders and verbally answer questions about their designs.

Lesson 4 - Evaluating and re-designing
Students will evaluate their designs from the previous lesson and re-design their glider using the most appropriate materials. They will present their glider to the group.

Lesson 5 - Creating a Parachute
Students will be given a design task. They are asked to create a parachute to gently get their toy figurine to the ground based on their knowledge of materials.
