HOW MANY CHECKPOINTS WILL YOU FIND? Science Scramble is an outdoor adventure race and NOT your mom's QR code scavenger hunt! Checkpoints are marked on a map and it’s up to you and your teammates to find as many as you can before the race clock runs out. You can run or walk, – it’s up to you! In Science Scramble, the fun is in the exploring; go as fast, slow, near, or far as you like. Whichever way you travel, you are bound to discover something neat.
This Science Scramble focuses on an introduction to atoms. Key ideas and concepts are taken directly from NGSS MS-PS1 Matter and Interactions.
Teams of students REQUIRE a device with a FREE bar code reader application installed. Do students have phones that they can use? Does your school have access to tablets or similar devices? Do you have enough for one device for each group of four students?

~ 5 page teacher background and preparation document that includes 1) how the race works 2) bar code reader app suggestions 3) tips to organize the race 4) easy directions to create a customize-able map that is specific to your school 5) tips for selecting checkpoints 6) other observations and tips that I have learned from doing this activity.
~ 2 Page student question sheet: Contains questions and multiple choice answers for each of the 25 checkpoint stops. No questions can be answered accurately without having been to the actual checkpoint. This eliminates student "guesses."

~ 26 slide PowerPoint Answer Key that can be used as a follow up. Each slide contains the image and correct answer directly from the scramble for each of the 25 checkpoint stops in the race.

This is a very fun activity that your students will remember throughout the year. It will take a full 55 minute class period but you do have flexibility of adjusting the race time allowed. Students must work in teams to be successful in this race.
