How can we sort plants or seeds so that we can name and categorise them?
Encourage children to think of their own way to sort. e.g
sort seeds using words, pod, winged, flat, stripy, spherical and
Feathered. Ask children how to sort into a written method and they will often choose tables or ven diagrams. In this lesson children are taught how to classify seeds and plants using a classification key. They are first given a scaffold and visuals to support them. Children can then move onto working with more sophisticated classification keys and fill in their own criteria.
Encourage use of classification key for Grade 2 and Grade 3 science unit on plants or Higher ability children in grade 1.
