Investigating Sound Mini Unit! 5 lessons in the Explicit Teaching Model (I do, We do, You do, Ploughback, with WALTS, WILFS and TIBS), all ready to go!
Students will explore what sound is, where it fits into their world and everyday life, what creates sound, how we hear it and how volume can change through experimenting with materials. Students will then order sound from softest to loudest for the final lesson, where they draw the maraca they have created, filled with each item in the boxes below (rice, beads, etc.) and then cut and paste in order of prediction from softest to loudest sounds that would be created. Students can then test their creations by creating the maracas and checking the accuracy of their predictions.
This includes a Powerpoint that sets out each lesson explicitly, with the 'you do' on the slide to be copied into books. One lesson does have a worksheet (provided), but this is also displayed on the 'you do' slide for that lesson, so could be copied just as easily. My first graders had SO much fun with this unit!
