Are you looking for supplementary resources to upgrade your Science curriculum on Classifying Organisms? Look no more!
It is a simple yet excellent one-page worksheet to introduce/ practice to use the dichotomous key which is used by scientists to identify the living organisms.
Yes, it is concise and straightforward. But anyway… wondering how to use it? Students are given a list of amphibian images, and they must use the key to determine the name of the amphibian: Red-eye tree frog, Spotted salamander, Eastern Newt, Axolotl, and Poison dart frog. Answers are included.
Hand out the printables of your choice (the color sheet with five realistic photos of amphibians, the color sheet with drawn illustrations of amphibians, or the black and white sheet with drawn amphibians) and the sheet with the dichotomous key (color or black and white version). The key immediately gives the students two alternatives. Encourage the students to read both of them, to decide which description best fits the evidence, and move on to the next set of two choices given in the key till the name of the amphibian is found.
It guides how to identify five amphibians: Red-eye tree frog, Spotted salamander, Eastern Newt, Axolotl, and Poison dart frog.
It is an open-ended way to use these handouts to enhance their critical observation skills to identify each organism. Use it as the introduction to the unit of Classifying Organisms, homework activity or as an example when introducing the concept of the Dichotomous key. Have fun with it!
