Hands-On Science Vocabulary Instruction

Tired of having students copy definitions? Do your students not have the background experiences needed to relate to the vocabulary when it's introduced? This guide is an opportunity to introduce new science vocabulary using hands-on experiences!

There are four parts to each lesson:
Part 1: The teacher leads the students in an activity for 10-15 minutes. They draw and record what they did in their notebook.
Part 2: Use direct instruction to teach students the new terms using motions, listening, talking, drawing, and a foldable page.
Part 3: Students revisit the activity page and identify what they did using their new vocabulary.
Part 4: Students do an "I Learned" page as Output.
