Here is my tried and tested cumulative grade 5 science project on Matter. I love this project because it gets students to experiment hands-on with the scientific method and with various concepts related to matter that we have already learned in class. For this project, which later becomes part of our class science fair, students are asked to conduct their own experiment that shows a change of state of matter and to discuss the chemical/physical change that accompanies that change of state.
To scaffold the project, I have included a list of scientific vocabulary and definitions for this unit, clear instructions/guidelines with a checklist, a brief history of the scientific method, an organizer of the scientific method and some examples of how I want some of the questions answered, a bibliography, and a rubric.
I normally present the scientific method as a form of procedural writing that I link cross-circularly to science.
