Here is my tried, tested, ready-to-print and hand out cross-curricular Grade 5 science project.
This project links science with art, drama, and media literacy! The task: students are to create their very own toy made out of (preferably) recycled material using one of the forms of energy studied in class. They will then get to market their product through a commercial and an advertisement poster that they will have created. Their commercial can be in the format of their choice (an animation using a computer program, a video of themselves, or a skit). They will also create a logo for their company.
A task outline is included in this package, along with a list of scientific vocabulary that they should be using, a checklist, guiding questions, a bibliography cheat sheet, and a rubric for easy marking.
I have done this project with my students virtually every year that I have taught grade 5 and it has been a success in my classroom. I also use this project in conjunction with my grade 6 project on electricity with my 5/6 classes.
