This is a great, scaffolded practice or summative assessment that focuses on the skills and process of using the scientific method. A fictitious experiment is done and explained in detail and students have to explain the steps of the scientific method from the scenario. Students are asked to do the following:
1) Identifying variables
6) Graph the given data
7) Analyze the data
8) Draw a conclusion
This is a great assessment to give as one of the first assessments using the scientific method as it includes a template and the data is already given. This is a great stepping-stone for students to learn from before they conduct their own experiment and have to write-up their own lab report. I have also given this as practice where students work together and then we discuss the answers as a class.
In order to assess this lab I have included the Next Chapter MYP Criteria B & C Level 3 Science rubrics. In order to make the MYP assessing easier for both teachers and students I have created task-specific descriptors that are found next to the actual rubric descriptors that focus on this particular activity. These task-specific descriptors also allow students the opportunity to better understand the MYP terminology and what they are being assessed on before they receive their final level of performance.
**All documents are editable and the MYP component can easily be removed for non-MYP classrooms!**
