Using glow sticks purchased at the Dollar Tree (8 bracelet package), students will investigate whether temperature affects how brightly a glow stick "glows."
This lab requires very little set up. Two beakers, two glow sticks and a source of water/warm water for each group. Turn out the lights in the room for this lab =)
The lab paper opens up with a concept cartoon showing students discussing what they think will happen and then asks students to create a hypothesis using "if, then, because" format, make qualitative observations in a data table, identify variables and write a conclusion. The warmer the water, the brighter the stick will glow.
I usually heat the warm water using hot plates so that I have better control over the temperature. Too hot and the glow sticks will melt and release the chemical inside. Keep it under 40 degrees Celsius)
Have fun with this one!
