This is a beautifully designed lab fusing the scientific method and basic arithmetic skills. The lab is LOADED with color and lots of fun to do. It's engaging and can be used for many age and ability levels. Data is provided so the instructor has discretion as to whether students use their own materials or not. Therefore, this lab is designed so students in many different educational scenarios can be successful and have fun.
Many state science tests are heavily saturated with questions on scientific processes, the nature of science, and applying the scientific method. This lab is a fantastic way to prep your students in grades 4 through 8.
Students perform 2 experiments: Experiment 1 involves putting water droplets on a penny. Experiment 2 involves the same BUT with the addition of liquid soap. Students develop a hypothesis for each scenario, collect data, and address conclusion questions. Additionally, key terminology is addressed: independent variable, dependent variable, control, extraneous variables, and more. Key physical processes of cohesion and surface tension are also explored.
This is a thorough and DYNAMIC activity that covers a ton of information. This has been used as a lab/activity and assessment. This is an effective teaching tool one on one, in small groups, and as a class when using a Smart Board/Promethean Board/Projection.
