SWBAT design their own experiment and properly record each of the steps using the steps of the scientific method.
This is a lesson I designed as part of our Introduction to Inquiry unit at the beginning of the year. In this lesson, students will review the steps of the scientific method, then we use the famous urban legend of Mikey (the cereal kid) who supposedly dies from eating Pop Rocks and drinking soda, to design our own experiment, record data, and report conclusions.
The best part of this lesson, is that I actually eat the pop rocks and soda in front of them - complete with tons of dramatic "I'm about to barf" actions! Then we get to record how many times I burp and how sick I feel afterwards for our "data". Kids LOVE this lesson! I swear they talk about it for weeks afterwards!
