With this lab, life science students receive....
-an introduction to the steps of seed germination and seedling growth (including the gradual shrinkage of cotyledons);
-an introduction (or review) of the scientific method, including:
--determining the manipulated variable (independent variable)
and the measured variable (dependent variable);
--incorporating a control;
--brainstorming variables that should be controlled;
--pactice in the use of data tables;
--practice in the construction of graphs (axis labels and bars);
--analysis of results; confidence level criteria
-practice in the use of metric tools: balances (including the use of the tare weight); graduates (and optionally, pipettes); rulers;
-a pH testing opportunity
-practice following written instructions (and being careful observers);
As its name implies, this lab also provides an opportunity for some discussion of the topic of acid rain.
