Have you ever wondered which brand of hand soap works the best? In this little science experiment, you and your students can come up with an answer!
Using petri dishes with agar (sold on Amazon or in a local teacher store), brands of soap, and the scientific method, you and your students will test different brands of soap and grow germs.
I use this activity as a whole group activity with my 5th graders. It is our introduction and discussion through the Scientific Method, but can easily be done as a science project by one student. The student packet includes: Purpose, Key Terms, Brands of Soap, Hypothesis, Experiment Subject, Experiment Variable, Experiment Controls, Results, and Conclusion. In the conclusion, students write a letter to family and friends to suggest soap brands to use, sharing the results. Letter paper, suggested rubric, and photos are included.
This document is in PDF format. If would like it in Word so that you can make changes to fit your needs, please contact me. It wouldn't upload properly as a Word doc. It also includes sample pictures, answers, and suggestions. This is detailed, but could use less or more to fit your needs. It's a good start for anyone! :)
