Teaching your students the proper steps of Scientific Method is CRUCIAL at any grade level.
What in the heck is a whirligig? A whirligig is actually anything that spins, or has parts that spin. Ya know those "helicopters" that fall from Maple trees that spin around and around as they fall? That's an example of a whirligig.
I've taken that concept and created a template on an 8.5" x 11" paper where your students can cut/fold into a shape, then when dropped it will spin/rotate/whirl down to the ground. With these whirligig templates, the students will follow a near week's worth of activities in constructing the "best" whirligig of the class by following your simple directions (included in this product). Best being: most accurate, and longest hangtime. Students will walk through the entire scientific method while having a blast. If your students are anything like mine, they will soar through this hands-on approach to learning without a single hint of complaining. They will walk away with a deeper understanding of the need for good observations, the requirement of accurate data collection, and the benefit of drawing conclusions based on their results. On top of that, they will walk away with a sense of accomplishment as they tweak/edit/change/perfect their whirligig to success. Plus, they'll just love saying "whirligig".
